Hiking in Montesclaros: Meadows and “Caleras”
27 February| 15€
Why Hiking in Montesclaros?
Montesclaros owes its name to the whiteness of its hills covered with limestone marble. Among the meadows that are lost in the horizon there are “Caleras” and quarries that were exploited centuries ago.
The caleras were furnaces to produce the lime and that have been used until the middle of the s. XX.
And from the marble quarries, compact metamorphic rock formed from limestone rocks, the material was extracted from the monumental fountain of the Cibeles.
This was commissioned by King Carlos III to the architect Ventura Rodríguez, and originally designed to adorn the gardens of La Granja de San Ildefonso but finally served to redevelopment of the Paseo del Prado.
